No the title of this post is not referring to any unfortunate results of the festivities of one's just-passed birthday week.
Instead it relates to the last two books that one recently finished reading - The Strain and The Fall are two books by famed moving picture director Guillermo del Toro. They are the first two parts of his vampire trilogy as recommended to me by Groovy Spirits via Mr Prada. I found them to be a quick and entertaining read that was reminiscent of the very cinematic oeuvre of Matthew Reilly. I await my reserved copy of the final instalment to arrive from the library.
Speaking of the birthday week it has gone rather well - despite Legion2 stealing most of the glory with his 40th.
As it turns out when turning 42 the meaning of life is friends - or rather Facebook Friends as one received bountiful birthday wishes on the actual day. I was also pleased to see that one's birthday twin CC celebrated hard enough for both of us.
The birthday week produced many wishes and a pile of chocolate as cake substitute from Days of our Libraries rightfully shamed for her culinary oversight.
Finally a day of presents arrived on Friday, although one did have to gift many of them to oneself - those being the latest supplements in one's favourite gaming line, the Commands and Colors(sic) series.
Further gifts awaited one's return home with the arrival of an overseas order of gaming cards and the special gifts from Salsa Girl.
Early Saturday morning BestFriendSincePrep did his part in making one's birthday special by thrashing me soundly in Memoir'44 Online all the way from Denver - and whilst preparing dinner.
The birthday week was topped off with drinks and nibbles at a local establishment attended by the likes of Salsa Girl, Freeloading Mum, Handy Dad, Legion2, and Badger.
All in all a good birthday week - although a little light on the feasting side, which one shall correct in only another 51 weeks.

Yet another what's been going on post
So, sigh, it has gotten away from me again. It being: keeping a regular schedule of post with significant content - sure I could post a whole lot of twitteresque posts ala my 25 blogs of Xmas.
However, since I can link to it, you can see I've already done it before.
As to the happenings that have kept one away from The Tales, well I can count amongst them...
A relaxing old-school gaming Sunday which led into the week of the print system upgrade.
Not only did this so quoted "half-day job" turn out to be a full five day extravaganza, but I was also forced to skip gaming and assist AntagonisticAl at one of her festival events when there was trouble getting a laptop to present correctly. The difficulty of my investigation was enhanced considerably by the official photographer's extensive knowledge of everything. So amidst this flurry of superior advice I had to listen to many a repetition of basic IT procedure (i.e. turn it off and on) long after I was already onto the more advanced stuff like searching the help file. Suffice to say the hour was late and the thank-you-for-fixing-it champagne, pizza and cake so plentiful that I was forced to stay on for the duration of the event.
To make matters worse, just when the upgrade was coming to a near close - I say near as there are still some persistent niggly issues to be addressed - the Internet decided to disappear for most of Friday leaving me pretending to have work to do.
Having made it to this weekend last it was a pleasure to load Legion2 into the car and head out bush to attend a visit back to town by The Fungi Lady. Doom, The Doctor, MatrixMan, Vengeful Vic, and Couch Killer were also present.
Sunday, however, was back into the trend of horribly drawn out happenings as I attended the Carlton Weagles game with The Great Sandro after ElfBoy conveniently caught himself a Man-Cold and was unable to join us.
In true primary-school tradition though, he made a magnificent recovery in time for some post-footy card playing with Pirate Dave enticed into attendance. Said card games all being long drawn out affairs.
In a way it was a relief to return to work this week even though I was faced with the looming spectre of lingering printer problems and a return visit to our shores of the infamous Torchwood (there will undoubtedly be more on this iniquitous occurrence after a drinking session scheduled for tomorrow night).
Gaming was once again sacrificed for other pursuits - although this time not too far removed as it was another Geektogether drinks night.
Successful events from the evening include: Legion2 making it along for the first time; Pirate Dave reaching expected levels of inebriation in record time; and myself avoiding being dragooned into another game of The Viking Hat GM.
Today made the perfect antidote for lots of work with training in the city followed by an inexpensive steak lunch with CC and The Polster before returning to work for a meeting, some frivol and then home time.
Phew that was a lot to get through. Perhaps there would be some benefit to twitterising my postings after all...

My Week of Cake
This year my birthday week has been focused on baked goods - specifically cake.
I started the dessert theme myself, as one often has to, by concealing subtle hints within my weekly update to my library staff concerning my projected whereabouts for the remainder of the week.
Here is an example of the level cunning subtleness I employed:
At first it appeared not to have worked as I went a whole day without cake. However my Wednesday arrival at BEA branch was greeted with not one but two cakes - joy!
It seems that Devil's Advocate had supplied a largish piece of Emergency Cake in case there was a critical lack of cake in my system.
So having polished off the Emergency Cake I moved on to tackling the larger, yet just as delightfully chocolaty, cake supplied by The Beaumaris Ballerina. Some time after that I started fixing computers and other things IT in a state of cake-induced fugue.
Thursday was such a blur of meetings and schnitzel lunches and crazy weather that I failed to notice the lack of any cake-ish things.
This serious lapse from my compatriots was rectified on Friday morning when I stepped out of a morning meeting into a cake wonderland - complete with the second present (no wait Pirate Dave gave me some Dolphin Clips Thursday night - let your imagination run wild about what exactly a Dolphin Clip is...) I mean Third present.
See how happy I am with my giant RFID tag cake courtesy of Days of our Libraries
(couriered in secretly by Bomber Babe).
My cake euphoria carried me through the remainder of the day and into the evening where I caught up with birthday twin CC having drinks to celebrate her attaining a measly total age on the morrow.
I stayed only long enough to down a couple of drinks and treated the whole exercise as a training run for this evenings main event.
Now I'd best be off to gussy myself up for my time in the limelight tonight. After all there is such an awful lot of gussying to be done.
I'll end with a caution for you oh good readers of mine: with what BestFriendSincePrep has planned for this evening, and knowing his track record, I fear that this missive may very well be the last time you hear from me alive...

... The Caramel Cake Crisis
So yesterday was a day of significant aging for me - well not that significant, wait for next year.
As is the tradition at work I made a box cake, which is no mean feat in this current heat wave. With the able assistance of The Tiger I was up at the crack of dawn and stirring away before popping things in the oven and getting on with the unimportant preparation for work.
For this year I had decided to avoid the whole writing numbers on top of the cake thinking by making cupcake-lets and I was unable to resist going for caramel as it is one of my favourite flavours.
Arriving at my home branch I was proudly brandishing my creations at Mr Prada and the rest of the Sandy Squad when Days of our Libraries dashed out to her car and returned with an enormous slab of mud cake iced and covered with crumbled chocolate.
It was caramel.
The icing was caramel.
My cupcake-lets were insignificant compared to this monster of marvellous caramelosity.
I was devastated and then had to go to a Writing for the Web training session where I was told it was terrible web writing if one composed ones missives using big words and that one should not eschew the use of plain and simple phrases.
It was like a one-two punch but, being the trooper I am, I managed to recover by consoling myself with a slab of delicious caramel mud cake.
The evening saw the return of one of my previous nemeses Innocent Em for a birthday stealing farewell event at the local drinking establishment. There were speeches - which neglected the birthday boy - and a smaller coterie stayed on for dinner. It turns out Em isn't quite so innocent being in the family way now.
I also received birthday wishes via telephone from The Great Sandro who overcame his fear of embarrassment to call and scads of people on Facebook including birthday twin CC.
All in all a reasonable good day.

... The Making of a Speech
I meant to post an entry yesterday but all my spare computer time has been filled with the hand-carving of my best-man speech for Legion2's wedding reception on Saturday night.
It's coming along swimmingly and, in fact, the big danger may be running over my 7-8 minute limit by 10 minutes or so.
Said hand-carving has been taking place in Google Docs which means I can say:
(246 Alternate Title: Thing #18 Web-based Apps)
and knock off another one of the 23 things (which I need to do now that 2.1 is here and there are another 23 things).
Google Docs works quite well for traveling from place to place without the need for saving files to disk or M$ Office. It's "lack" of advanced formating tools actually makes it much more productive and the absence of Petey Paperclip is it's apotheosis.
Other things keeping me busy have included such great fun as:
Prior to coming home tonight Legions2-4 and I collected our penguin costumes for Saturday night in a scheduling move maliciously designed to deny me my soccer game. Of course finding out that Legion3 was in the end able to make the 4.30 time which would have allowed me to go on to kick the round ball did wonders for my extreme sense of lose.

Other things keeping me busy have included such great fun as:
- spending many days setting up new PCs at Beaumaris branch with no help from Imposter Phil or Polish Chris at council IT since they are snowed under after CC's recent departure - apparently with all the knowledge of how IT things work
- making the mistake of visiting Brighton branch and walking away seven new jobs for the worse
- adding more Ding to our circulation PCs. A little investigation uncovered the sound file used for nigh-inaudible alerts by our LMS and it's swift change will now go on to annoy staff no end whilst ensuring they no longer miss alerts
- having to listen to unprovoked insults from the new children's librarian - "this food is for the Summer Reading Club party this afternoon and you are not to eat it Phill" and Days of our Libraries - "please tick which meal options you want on training day - and you can't tick all of them Phill". One suspects Torchwood's hand is behind it all.

... A Burst of Geekiness
Monday night I attended my third Geektogether. This time I convinced Pirate Dave to go along as proof that I'm not making up all the stuff I say about gaming with other people.
Summary of the evening: Dave did an excellent job of making me look good by overindulging in Guiness and getting loud with the other geeks; I consumed many Guini myself - two of them after I'd stopped; lots of good gaming talk; surprisingly a bit of political and religious talk; about seven new gamers that I've not met before.
Tuesday was a gaming night, and one that BestFriendSincePrep deigned to actually show up for and, along with Legion2, Gavman and ArchEnemy, played a one-shot game of Special Forces - Action Movie role-playing. Zombies, demons, clichés and fun were the result.
Workwise I've spent most of my time hanging out with CC and Imposter Phil (who thematically came out to me as an "ex" gaming geek yesterday) getting ready for new PCs for Beaumaris branch.

... Another Free Lunch
The first two days of the week I was back at my spiritual home branch Sandringham. Monday night I hosted CC for the return dinner and then had a nice long phone talk with Svetlana the first for a while and I didn't realise how much I missed our talks until she had to hang up on me to get me to stop talking. Tuesday was a card's only gaming night but I think ArchEnemy may have given me the cold he dragged himself out of bed with just so he could play.
Today was my regular day at Beaumaris. It was, as usual, interrupted. This time I had to go to Corp HQ for a user group meeting and a free lunch. The lunch happened at the beginning so I'm not sure why I stayed. It did have it's benefits though - as CC demo'd the helpdesk software we use I had many "oh it can do that" moments and I am going to start using it more heavily again.
After staying back late at Bea yakking with Ms Magpie and Mr Prada I dropped by JB on the way home to collect the new Tanya Donelly album. By new I mean released a year ago - which shows how long it is since I looked at her web page (if only there was some really simple syndicated way of being informed of updates to web sites).

... The Long Haul
I've had so many things happening and have ended up with little time for bloggerising them.
Sunday was a quick market coffee with Rugrat Twin followed by a gaming Sunday with surprise guests and multiple games going. I managed to be the second person ever to be eliminated from a game of Kings & Things (I am also the first person it ever happened to so my record is not so good)
Monday was a work as usual with a visit to Corporate HQ. In the evening I had dinner at my close neighbour CCs flat while she FaceBooked me. Facebook is a little underwhelming and I don't think I can get addicted to it, although it is another way to stay in touch with LittleBigGirl. I think for me it would be much easier to get addicted to reading forums where idiots argue with each other - mmmm anonymous opinions.
Tuesday was the new stove delivery and install on a self imposed credit day - although the new Supervisor Grand Chief K regime looks like it may crack down on that sort of independence - sigh, I shall miss Supervisor S. Regular Tuesday gaming ensued in the evening.
On Wednesday I proceeded to regain all my spent credit time by doing a long haul upgrade of public PCs that kept me there until the wee hours of 8.30. Luckily Mr Prada decreed that I could start late the next day to make up for it.
Said next day then became a blur of Brighton things and meetings and half a soccer game and not a lot else once home.

... The Long Weekend Beard
Another week and a bit has flown by and been consumed by floorboarding with Handy Dad (finished last Monday - finally) , work, and a little bit of play.
The Queens birthday long weekend, a broken shaver, and lots of tradie type renovation work, have combined to provide me with a beard.
Said beard has elicited much response from the librarians with the stand-outs amongst the "oh my gawds" being Big J's dismissive "well it looks scruffy" and Bomber Babe pointing out that I must be glad that Svetlana is in Croatia and not here to punish me for growing the beard!
Growing the beard is one of those things that happens every five years or so and the last few times it's been quite interesting to see how many more white patches there are.
In any case here it is and you be the judge: Scruffy or Rugged and Manly?? (hint: Rugged and Manly)

Last Tuesday I was back at the Corporate Castle holding the help desk together while SoccerBuddy and CC had training on a day off for The New IT Geek. The evening's gaming was a week four hodgepodge of various games with BestFriendSincePrep traitoring his way to victory in the wonderful cooperative game Shadows over Camelot.
Wednesday I was back again and trying hard not to answer any corporate calls even to the extent of attending one of my IT Team meetings with Mr Prada, Genealogy Jane and Vikki. In the evening I had dinner and drinks with CC and friends at the local.
Thursday was a morning at Bea, plugging in a broken computer to miraculously make it work, and then marveling at the efficiency of Mr Prada as the tasks I'd delegated to him came back completed before I'd even had a chance to progress much further in my myriad post upgrade jobs. Afternoon was a meeting about the public IT training. Some last minute calls re wireless hotspot setup for the library caused my soccer appearance to be at half time.
Friday was more wireless install prep and a marathon session with Sister Serials trying to sort out Ogonek magazine in the library catalogue - go borrow some now to make it worth our effort.
And today was the finishing touches to the floors (except for a couple more spots). I also went for and fixed Freeloading Mum's computer and scored a free dinner!

... the Week of Free Lunches
What a long and busy week it's been.
I've spent most of it Training up on the new Library Management Software at our suppliers HQ in the city. Four days of catered lunches and far too many lollies from the bowls on each table! Supervisor S was with me all week and we had guest appearances from Mr Prada, Sonja Roster Queen, Miss Amanda, Genealogy Jane, chanlib, Vikki, Sister Serials, Ms Magpie, Devil's Advocate and a few others.
At the same time I was dealing with settlement on the current house and pre-settlement non-disclosure of upcoming costs on the new flat. It's going to be such a holiday when the property stuff is over and I can relax with the major system upgrade at work.
Thursday night's soccer was a wonderful flashback to my childhood career as the heavens opened up and we were lashed with rain for about half of the game.
The final day of training was topped of with a night of farewell drinks for Jemima from the IT Helpdesk. CC was there as was The Polster and another Canadian CC acquaintance with a J name, coincidentally drinking CC (Canadian Club). Many xx and cokes were consumed but I made it home fine and the ice in the drinks kept my hydration levels at a safe level.
In four days of Train Travel I managed to be affected by a Connex Train delay every day - the worst was 35 minutes sitting at one station on my way in to drinks last night.

... the Prince of Darkness & Sky Captain
Watched these two movies last night as part of the long weekend relaxation (most of Saturday morning was a write-off after a pub night out with CC and friend Friday).
Prince of Darkness is a John Carpenter slow-build horror which works quite well in an investigative style. It still has moments when you want to yell at the cast to run away but staring at absolute evil as it gathers the strength to consume you is a staple of the genre.
Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow was very impressive technically and stylistically. It's maybe a tad too long but is generally a "ripping good yarn".
I have to go now since I'm about to be invaded for an evening of "the wife has the kids and it's a holiday tomorrow" gaming.

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow was very impressive technically and stylistically. It's maybe a tad too long but is generally a "ripping good yarn".
