Man-Shed Madness

Oh dear, one seems to be stuck on a permanent one week delay.

In any case, on the weekend last ElfBoy cashed in a group promise signed certificate and had a bunch of us make the trek North to have the debut gaming session in his man-shed.

Dutifully I loaded Pirate Dave, Legion2, and Young Jim into my vehicle while Badger and Gavman made their own journeys.

So, in the comfort of of a beautifully done up shed and humid temperatures we played and sweated our way through several hours of one of ElfBoy's games that he had bee unable to get to the table in a decade of gaming get-togethers - it was something to do with fantasy Japanese empire building and side games of cards involving Samurai.
One was particularly pleased to see five hours of play rewarded with one's empire ending in exactly the same state it started the game, as it is usually a hallmark of these sort of games that one's empire is obliterated post-haste.

We next powered through a lap of the car racing Formula D game of Pirate Dave's in which one lead masterfully for most of the game only to take the final turn too wide and wind up crossing in third - both the gear and the position.

Of course this being ElfBoy the event finished with some Magic the Gathering before we all tootled off home again, promising to return in the cooler months - but making sure not to sign anything this time.

A Very Important Party

It seems to me that a very important party is quite the fitting topic as one stumbles into one's 450th post to The Tales.

Several weeks ago Salsa GirlHulk and oneself made the rather long Southwards journey to partake of the Libraries celebration of Xmas. After some initial trepidation Hulk decided to cut loose on the dance floor with Groovy Spirits and indulge in much important running backwards and forwards.
We partook of some yummy food and headed home at a decent hour and definitely well before the karaoke was begun.

But that was not the very important party.

Last week was the User group Xmas lunch. It was preceded by a meeting but that is not one's focus for the day. There was once again an abundance of food available and I feel that the library was well represented by oneself, Sidekick and Supervisor Grand Chief K as together we made Bayside the clear leader in the consumption stakes.
One also took the opportunity to give Young Jim a telling off for his non-attendance at gaming this past half year. He muttered a promise of 110% attendance in the new year and I let him off easy due to some excellent wine.
In the end a large part of the afternoon was spent in important networking activities until the wine ran out and we ambled on home.

But that was not the very important party.

On the weekend past - or so - Salsa GirlHulk and oneself made our way to one's ancestral home for the important event of Freeloading Mum's 70th birthday celebrations. Of course all of Legion was in attendance as well as Handy Dad and many friends of the family.
Unfortunately young Hulk was feeling a little crowd-shy so we had minimal time to circulate, although one did manage to fit in an impromptu speech and several rounds of cake.

The party was, of course followed up in subsequent days with the gifting of Freeloading Mum's asked for electronic device and the resultant tech support from yours truly to get said device into a workable state.

All in all this time of year does seem to through up many a laudable reason for having a very important party.

A Moving Time, Parte the Seconde

Further grand adventures that occurred include.
  • 3 innumerable quests to IKEA in search of critical components for a new household
  • finally finding time to watch my Xmas dvd of Dredd and pronouncing it a 4 star experience
  • the successful procurement of Young Jim into the Tuesday Knights
  • finishing the grand epic Wheel of Tedium with A Memory of Light which turned out to be quite a good read and wrap up of the story line with minimal braid tugging, earning itself a 4 star rating
  • a mammoth Sunday's gaming recommencement with Badger, Pirate Dave, Young Jim, LegionFridgePowerJudge MingusBall Boy, Amoeba, ElfBoy, Gavman, lot's of boardgames and fun for all in The Gaming Garage
  • what can only be described as a devouring of the first season of Game of Thrones
  • much attendance at various supervisor training from which Sidekick will benefit - particularly the revelations about bullying
  • extreme computer rollout busyness - you all know how much one loves that
  • Pirate Dave's emergence as Mister Boardgames
  • the return of footy watching
  • a quite enjoyable read of Accellerando by Charles Stross
  • finally finding time to watch my Xmas dvd of Prometheus and pronouncing it a 3 star experience
  • a return to footy excursions with The Great Sandro and one's first ever Queen's Birthday match attendance
  • a good catchup with The Viking Hat GMExploding Ninja PonyThe Mad Magyar, and Frenchy, as TVHGM and progeny celebrated their co-located birthdays with abundant cake
  • a second Gaming Sunday, thus proving that there will be an ongoing pattern
And that catches us all up to an incredibly detailed level sothat you all know what has been going on in the wonderful world of The Tales.

See you all next week.

New Year, New Publishing Schedule

So I've finally managed to fulfil that promise to myself and change my publishing schedule.
The problem seems to be that I have moved it the wrong way. Sigh - three weeks.

Still it was the feast-ive season and one did have an awful lot of feast-iveness to attend to.
The work side of things was quite the herculean task, given that one has four workplaces at which to put in a good showing and the overall council soiree.

On the home front I did have help from Salsa Girl and Hulk although I did buckle up (buckle down?) and shoulder the majority of the consummative workload - not one, nor two, but three Xmas's''''!!
And all of them part of Hulk's first Xmas, and therefore requiring extra levels of celebration.

Amongst all that was the traditional migration northward for the seeing in of the New Year. This year was seen in from bed, counting down the last seconds then promptly off with the lights and giving in to the fatigue. Thank you Hulk for that change to our partying style - one may never be the last to leave again.

Speaking of traditions, one normally does some sort of roundup of the year in gaming and the general quality of The Tales. However as one has been on gaming hiatus for several quarters now (baring some Internet ancients sparing with Young Jim) and one also failed to out post FridgePower or even pass the half-century and the fact that it has become quite late and Hulk threatens to cut short ones slumber yet again (if The Tiger does not beat her to it) one had better get to bed rather than wallow in trifling statistics.

See you all in another regularly scheduled three weeks.

The Sidekick Search

Those who have known me for a while will be aware of my alter ego spawned during the heady days of Malaclypse III in the company of the likes of FridgePower, Judge Mingus, My Guitarist, Tuck, and other assorted musos - Testosterone Man - possibly related to fervent pounding of drums and other rugged and manly pursuits.

In any case the lack of a sidekick has held me/him back in all endeavours for many a decade.

I have tried many avenues to protégée procurement:

  • trials of Rhythm Section equals - Judge Mingus did not last long before soloing off on his own
  • grow your own - knocked on the head by Salsa Girl as Hulk is apparently too young to be cruising the streets fighting crime
  • recruitment - alas, while an awesome gaming addition, Young Jim, has proven rather reluctant on the whole smashing things to bits front. (and what's more he has a tendency to betrayal as evidenced by a 3 nil thrashing he once handed out to me while in league with Badger)
  • pleading with Supervisor Grand Chief K for the necessary help in getting all my work demons defeated - repeatedly scoffed at and uncomprehendingly disbelieved about the amount of effort required to make librarians happy on the IT front

However recently the stars seem to have aligned. Not only have I managed to finally rid the library of the scourge of marketing for once and all, but the resulting employment gap has been deigned to be filled with an IT Sidekick!

Supervisor Grand Chief K did, however, make sure it was not all puppies and roses for me as she dropped the responsibility for the "Recruitment Process" into my lap. Hence I have been up to my neck in SeekSpam and resume reading for weeks now. Culminating in a day of interviews in which I had to suffer through Devil's Advocate always offering the other point of view, and other various moments of me not getting my whim. Honestly I don't know what I was thinking putting together that interview panel.

Still we are very close now and it shouldn't be long before I can strut out at work with a sidekick by my side (and slightly behind).

Of course we are local government so not long is probably next Autumn.

Father's Day Fun

So on the momentous occasion of one's inaugural Father's Day one was lucky enough to be gifted special dispensation from one's beloved Salsa Girl to have a select couple of gamers around for an afternoon of gaming.

Of course this young man's thoughts turned to the Commands and Colors (sic) series of games and hence the invite went out to Badger and Young Jim who both eagerly accepted.

We engaged in slightly more than an afternoon to complete two close and fun games. Unfortunately we did alter the course of history with William the Conqueror doing rather a lot less conquering than expected under the guidance of Young Jim and yours truly - it was rather reminiscent of the debacle we had when Poland stopped the German invasion dead in it's tracks. Anyway there were snacks and tactics and tense dice rolls and lots of fun. We'll have to do it again next year. Or sooner I suppose.

Speaking of occasions today happens to be the awesome occasion of Salsa Girl and I having embarked upon our grand adventure two years (and a leap day) ago. Of course Hulk has now joined us to make it a family undertaking for the next 18 years and beyond of further adventure - the downside being that there's not a lot of opportunity to make celebratory cake while we're still adjusting ourselves to the Hulk-focused lifestyle.

Time seems to have gotten quite late so I'd best head off to bed now and make a start on my daily four hours of sleep. You'll hear more from me later.

The Last Hurrah

This Sunday last one held the last of one's monthly Sunday gaming days for some time - with Hulk's arrival scheduled for the end of the month it was thought best to not try for one more at the end of the month as well.

We had a cast of thousands. If you round up. A lot.

  • Legion2, Badger (regulars)
  • Gavman, Elfboy (semi regulars)
  • Young Jim (transitioning to regular)
  • The Bastard (pretending to be both semi-regular and transitioning to regular)
  • Judge Mingus, Ball Boy (first timers)

Many games were played including a surprising slant towards one's favourites.

It was the sort of amazing never-to-be-repeated gaming event that the likes of, say, The Real Greg Dean, would be kicking themselves for missing merely for being interstate.

The mound of snacks was nearly legendary enough to satisfy the The Viking Hat GM (who is some sort of minor deity of snacktitude).

All in all it was a great send-off for the monthly gaming and if you didn't make it then you should begin preparing yourself for The New Beginning starting sometime in the future, taking some form, and being held in some place.
With advance warning like that there will be no excuse for non-attendance!
