... The Curse of Chalion by Lois McMaster Bujold

Many other things are happening whilst I chip away behind the scenes composing my much anticipated conference report.

My finishing of this novel this morning for instance. It was such a wonderful read that I am ready to pronounce it my book of the year.
The Curse of Chalion has been the most enjoyable of the scant 19 or so books I have managed to read this nigh-overwhelmingly busy year.
It is a wonderfully written tale with great depth to the characters and world. I found that it's tale resonated with me as it used many of the themes that I enjoy immensely. I highly recommend it unless you have some unnatural aversion to books of the Fantasy genre (and even then you should know that the fantastical is minimal and it is much more a novel of medieval-esque society)
A big thank you to Vengeful Vic for persisting to recommend it until I got the hint and finally borrowed the book.

Speaking of curses I attended a bountiful BBQ feast at The Viking Hat GM's yesterday wherat I was plied with food and good company until the early evening, reminiscing over gaming times past with The Mad Magyar and The Blithe Bogan.
Eventually taking my leave - supplied with a goodly portion of leftovers as is the Viking custom - I then traversed this great city we live in to attend the birthday drinks of Legion4. Along with Legion2, Jamo and Tone we talked the night away while Legion4 sadly recreated his state of inebriation of last Xmas. Some sort of intervention will probably be in order in the near future.

Today has been a sublime day of not much to do other than bask in the joy of finishing a great book and catch up on all the domestic things that have to be done in order to keep one's demesne functioning to it's full capacity.

... The Star Trek Review

So, along with Fantomas and Pirate Dave from my regular Thursday night gaming group, I decided to forsake the game tonight for the only thing geekier - the new Star Trek movie.

It was pretty good using many of the common tropes of the franchise to explain the reboot of the continuity and pave the way for not having to slavishly follow the previous series and films.
Highly recommended.

The geekiness of Star Trek has even managed to eclipse my other big geek event of the week - another Geektogether. The Viking Hat GM organised the first of these in almost a year to try and kick-start his flailing gaming career after the The Blithe Bogan abruptly put an end to its latest burst of activity a few weeks ago.

And in a contrasting non-geeky event I, along with Legions 2-3, BrotherStealer, and MadMog, attended the housewarming for Spare Legion this Saturday past. With Badger and Hector the Nazi also in attendence much drinking and fun and frivolity was had by all.

... The Doom of Killer Bunnies

Under threat of painful Lepusitic death I have been forced to write about the affair of my previous Sunday night.

So I am forsaking any imparting to you of the strategy meeting of Monday which was yummyly catered for by Mr Prada and Days of our Libraries. Of the lunch beforehand where Mr P and I were the only ones to fully prepare for the afternoons talk fest - me with the main and he with the booze - I mean who hasn't learnt by now that having a big meal or a glass of wine before the meeting gives you the excuse for falling asleep "It's not you, it's the parma". Amatuers.

I shall also not be talking about my new character in the The Blithe Bogan's fantasy sage spending all the final hour's action loading his crossbow after running headlong into realistic weapon rules.

Nor shall I mention the first session of trenchcoated investigations that began on Tuesday night under the guidance of ElfBoy, leaving me at the mercy of Pirate Dave's puns as I am now back to being a lowly player.

Nor shall I mention the misunderstanding that led to me thinking Mr Prada was suggesting Easy Em as the blog name for our new staffmember.

Instead all you shall hear from me is the pure, unadulterated events of last Sunday Eve.

It was a sultry twighlight as Legion2 and I arrived in horse country for a catchup evening with The Fungi Lady at the demesne of Doom and The Doctor. Some would say we were late, and then early, and then late again as the clock was repeatedly mis-adjusted for daylight savings, but regardless we indulged in a passing amount of smalltalk and then commenced the main event - tackling the monstrosity that is Killer Bunnies the card game.
Our instructor had a pile of cards that ws a metric foot high but luckily we played with a smaller amount as it was a beginner's game. It was fun and we played a second game which went on a tad too long but it was all okay in the end as The Doctor returned from work at the hospital and regailed us all with enthralling tales of nurses involved in pillow fights - she may have mentioned other things but I wasn't paying attention for some reason.

Phew. That should keep Doom from kicking in my door in a murderous "why didn't I make the blog?!?" rage.

... The Do-overs

Well here we are at the tail end of attempt number three at "Be kind to AntagonisticAl week".

Week one ended after an hour and a half with only Lord of the Small Fries giving me any credit at all - "that was quite a long time for you to be nice to someone Phill".

The second week ended after a misunderstanding. Apparently being nice to someone entails more than just not being mean so I was hit with "you haven't been nice to me all day Phill so this week is a do-over".

At this rate I'll have to be nice until Xmas! So fingers crossed that I can make it through the remains of this week without running into Her Marketing-ness and her plethora of problems... dammit I think I just caused another do-over!

Also speaking of do-overs, at last nights gaming I was forced to retire my character after The Viking Hat GM stuck to his idea of what he should do and ignored my characters dice proven skill at deception while the The Blithe Bogan performed none of the rules-enforcing his game running position is supposed to involve and Exploding Ninja Pony cowered at his end of the table eating snacks that were destined to be mine.
My do-over character is fitting in to the team, for now, but revenge shall be mine, umm his, I have no character/player separation problem.

... The Unexpected Kindness

So after yet another Training Day where I was expected to earn my free lunch by presenting IT stuff to my staff, and a few days of last minute RFID tagging and nigh-constant scanning of books I was stopped dead in my tracks on Wednesday night.

Upon my arrival at Exploding Ninja Pony's Fortress of Doom™, The Viking Hat GM promptly presented me with two pre-cooked meals to help me in my quest for better bachelor living.
Of course I was immediately suspicious - a condition that continues despite the wonderfully satisfying full-belly feeling from the pumpkin soup last night. So far only good has come of it but you never know, it could be a slow-acting poison...

In a move more in his traditional style TVHG and The Blithe Bogan are at this moment trading blunt email ripostes over the state of the gameplay from that night. I plan to roll up my sleeves and dive in shortly after finishing my scribing here. Hopefully things will stay on a civil level as I do hate it when mum and dad fight!

In another move of unexpected kindness next week has been dubbed "Be kind to AntagonisticAl week" because apparantly my relentless hounding of her in her capacity as a hated marketing officer is somehow a little upsetting. Go figure?!
It will be a struggle but I should be able to make it as the Monday public holiday reduces the duration by a whole 20%.
My one fear is that said kindness to A could become a habit in the way that many of our character flaws often do.

... The End of the Busy Days?

I think that was just my biggest non-Svetlanaland break. As the title may give away I have had very little "free" time to blog and also because of the massive tome that Badger has had me reading since January first I have had no easy "just finished a book" posts to make.

That doesn't mean, however, that nothing has been happening - as this sample should prove irrefutably:
  • a team lunch at The Yacht Club followed by gaming at my abode in the evening
  • the physio's all clear for knee go-live day at soccer
  • multiplying my RFID tagging output by ten at Hampton and reaching the allusive 100 items! (only 5467 steps that day however)
  • another regular card tournament at my place with most of the regulars in attendance
  • the soccer groups annual family BBQ
  • spruiking the RFID at Brighton to not one but two visiting contingents of interested libraryland visitors, then rushing to Hampton to lose a battle with a virus infested staff computer, and consequently arriving late to night one of my second great experiment of gaming with The Viking Hat GM, and Exploding Ninja Pony - this time under the auspices of a new GM (blogname pending - edit: The Blithe Bogan)
  • network outages ending, virus removal complete, and regular gaming all evening
  • early morning wake up calls from The Tiger, who now needs me to stand by the bowl in order to eat - who says cats aren't neurotic!
  • working on the desk with Sister Serials while the Sandy Squad talk about me in their staff meeting and, more distressingly, have cake and biscuits in said meeting without me.
  • session two of gaming with a baby in the room. I must say it does inspire having the players encounter a screaming monster
  • attending a morning tea and lunch - flanked by some talk about wireless hotspots - out in the far reaches of libraryland. The event itself being marred somewhat by the onset of yet another Man-Cold
  • spending my training day preparation time suffering from the aforementioned YAMC. Being fuzzy headed and sneezy and sniffly is not conducive to scribing precise answers to IT questions. I did while away some time watching The King of Kong - force-lent to me by Sister Serials. It was lots of fun and I think I may have found my new hairstyle in the bad guys mullet. Mr Prada did ask the pertinent question though - "is it Svetlana approved?"
  • a tortuously early start to training day under orders from Devil's Advocate to collect IT gear from the corporate castle, leaving me too exhausted to properly demolish the morning tea, lunch and post-event drinks
So there you have it. Up to date and ready to return to our regularly scheduled blogging.
