The Aged Sir Clive

So this weekend past Legion2 and oneself headed out for the celebration of Sir Clive Pitbull having survived to a ripe old age.

Said celebration was held in the unexpectedly most hipster joint one has ever attended - our night was beset with bearded waiters, activations, twists, bespoke music, and infusions.

One was particularly surprised that experimental blendings of beer and strawberry cost one more than the default boutique beer, or, after tasting, anything at all.

Poor Legion2 was disdainfully slapped down for having the temerity to ask for a smaller glass to end the evening when anyone who's hip should know that one-size-only is where it's about to be at.

In any case we had a great catch up and natter and were able to monopolise Sir Clive's time for much of the evening.

I was even able to sneak in late with Salsa Girl none the wiser - although Hulk did stir and put me to work before i could collapse gratefully into my waiting bed.

Farewelling the Footwear

So this evening one has deposited one's Hippy Stomping Boots in the bin for collection on the morrow.

This was prompted by the ongoing house hunting and the imminent need to pack and move everything.

A perusal of ones things found my eye focusing on the footwear that I fondly remember. Probably Sir Clive Pitbull would be the only other to even recall them - having been quite heavily involved in their naming.

I however remember my long association with them. They carried me through the nineties (yes the nineties!) quite handily, stomping out many a bass drum line and the occasional bass player, right Judge Mingus? Perhaps they would sell as Malaclypse Memorabillia?

In any case, for the past decade they had served their time as "about the house" shoes and slowly slipped into slipper territory. Until they were made redundant in a cunning move by Salsa Girl when she supplied me with a pair of actual comfy slippers. It was as if she didn't like me donning "those mangy things" as she affectionately dubbed them.

So it has become time to farewell my old foot friends and send them on their journey to the big shoe rack in the sky.

Even though they still have some wear left in them... and the garbage collection isn't until tomorrow morning.........

Children's Events

Over the past few days one has attended several children's events.

One such event was yesterdays first birthday party for the esteemed progeny of Sir Clive Pitbull.
Salsa Girl and I attended a little late after failing to heed the common sense advice to "never go down Punt Road".

Legion3 also attended along with Madmog and their little one and we all partook of many nibbles, sweets, and lashings of free soft drinks. As the afternoon progressed there was much child play - the pit of small round doom being a baby favourite - and at one stage I was even employed as a horse by The Evil One's offspring.

We left well fed and worn out. As befits such an outing.

The next children's event was the evening musical performance of Days of our Libraries' musical issue.

It was one's first concert attendance for quite some time but one did remember to bring the appropriate accoutrements as one's earplugs were well and truly needed - both from the "metal" music and the direct into the ear conversations with Days.

All in all it was a good to see the up and coming talent. I do have my suspicions that the follow-on act was a parody of death metal given that all their songs sounded the same and the lyrics consisted of constant low pitched growling. Still, each to their own.

Quite good as far as children's events go, and the free beer from Days certainly helped.

... The Nuptuals of Sir Clive

The big event this week was my attendance at the wedding of Sir Clive Pitbull. There was also some upgrade stuffgoing on as well but I wasn't paying much attention to that as my focus was on the free feed of the Saturday evening event.

I was once again designated Legion driver and packed Legion's 2, 3, Madmog and BrotherStealer into my transportation device for the leisurely drive down to sunny Williamstown.

Upon arrival my suspicions were confirmed - we were at the same venue that had hosted Doom and The Doctor's engagement soiree - so much for expanding my resume of Williamstown venue attendance.

So, while I struggled through my 'nam-like flashbacks of events in the venue, the ceremony and mixed finger-food reception continued forthwith. I could tell I was off my game as I repeatedly failed to be at the serving table as new dishes were brought forth for consumption. I even suffered several attacks of politeness and allowed others to serve themselves before I had taken as much as I could.
Still my condition was nothing as compared to Sir Clive's. His reputation as a fanatical purveyor of all musical things punk, noise and experimental was dealt severe blow after blow as
first: a karaoke machine was wheeled out without nary a whine from him, and
second: pop song after pop song played on throughout the evening.
The ultimate proof of his new status of "you've changed man" was when he took a place as a link in the conga line for Peter Allen's When My Baby Smiles at Me.

Departing at a reasonable hour I was only subject to a mild level of in-car shenanigans from Legion's 2 and 3 who had consumed a reasonable but unspecified number of beverages which still proved to be below the "too many" level.

All were soon home and warm and cosy after a good night out celebrating.

... The Upgrade Week

Since last we spoke the bulk of my time has been taken up with a library system upgrade which has, unfortunately, involved scads of work from yours truly despite my every effort to have it fix itself.

Of course this hasn't stopped a multitude of other events occurring in my tumultuous life. Amongst them are:
  • Corporate get-togethers replete with morning tea and lunch
  • a footy trip with The Great Sandro including a magnificent 40 minute wait at our usual meeting point as he thought I may just still be home at our scheduled meeting time. This caused me to skip dinner in order to get into the game ASAP. Of course there was then a 10 minute delay on entry - missing us the beginning of the match. Further insult was added at half time when only every second nourishment dispensing station was open causing 30 metre queues and late our return to our seats.
  • a gaming Sunday which helped me to relax somewhat in preparation for the onslaught of the upgrade week ahead (The Tiger hissing like a cobra at the presence of MatrixMan's offspring was a little counter to stress relief though)
  • a visit to a knee specialist with an oddly detached and alien manner - and not the cool hunt you down one by one type of alien. Anyway it looks like the ACL may have been the culprit all along and reconstruction may be the only option for improvement. An MRI is in the works to get a better idea of what's happening in front of my knee-pit.
  • a tortuous desk shift serving the public
  • a tortuous return to gaming with The Viking Hat GM and Co.
  • a mad dash home to find that I had inadvertently avenged myself upon The Great Sandro by leaving him waiting on my stoop, only to have him pull the master-stroke and demand pre-game doughnuts. Said doughnuts caused us to be 2 people from the front of the queue when the match sold-out and the window closed. Needless to say one disgruntled doughnut-eating train trip later we were ensconced in my warm comfortable lounge room watching the pies performance on the tele-o-vision instead of being crushed into the icy arena as we'd intended.
  • some sedate buck's night drinks for the benefit of Sir Clive Pitbull
  • an irrefusable invite to an afternoon birthday drink for Amoeba at which the suns warmth had me down to a t-shirt on a winters afternoon wasting away time I could have spent on upgrade preparation
  • a long, lonely afternoon and evening of preparing the libraries for this weeks days of reduced catalogue access - with only my overtime to keep me warm
  • a day of near-perfect "not much to do" without the main computer "stuff" accessible - although I was forced to get some other work done
All in all quite the busy time for Phill and the rest of the week looks likely to continue the pattern so don't wait up for my next missive.

... Princess Mononoke

I finally caught up with this anime feature only some 5 or 6 years after it's wave of popularity has passed - I'm so anti-cool.

It is a studio Gibli production and various others of theirs have been enthused towards me by the likes of Sir Clive Pitbull and The Composer in the past - both of whom would be horrified that I watched it in the English dub rather than with the subtitles but, sometimes, when I want to see a movie I want to SEE the movie rather than spend my time reading it. And besides with an all star voice cast I figured it would be well voice acted and in the end I was mostly right.

Princess Mononoke was quite the enjoyable movie and managed to have an epic feel without too many over the top anime moments. I recommend it as a reasonable storywith a great sense of the landscape it is set in - much like Lord of the Rings. Why one reviewer called it the Star Wars of animated films I don't quite understand since LOTR is a quite suitable comparison. Oh well.

And how did I come to finally view this you may ask?
Well it was returned by a conscientious borrow on one of the many occasions I happened to be near the desk during the the post-Xmas borrower blitz. Said borrower remarked that the disk didn't work properly.
With Seditious Sam (our designated DVD checker-outerer) off on holidays I decided on the spot to take it home for some technical investigation.
Other than a few small sound glitches all was well and I'll have to try this whole technical investigation thing again and make sure I get my money's worth out of my time in LibraryLand.

... The Wedding of Legion2 and The BrotherStealer

Yesterday was finally the big day where the BrotherStealer got her way and was wed to Legion2.

It was quite a hot day to be dressed as a penguin but thankfully the ceremony wasn't until early evening and it was outside with an evening breeze. Positioning for the ceremony could have been better with those in the party not getting married having to squint into the sun to see any of the action.

The only real pre-ceremony drama was removing the fur of The Tiger which while apparently impossible to vacuum out of the car comes off quite easily with the application of fancy clothes.

During the ceremony I had a moment of mild concern when the brides ring hid itself in the far corner of my pocket to avoid detection when I went to retrieve it as part of my starring role.

Photo taking time, although short, kept me from getting to the free predinner drinks for a while.

The venue was the right size for the hundred or so people with the outdoor decking with city views proving quite popular throughout the night.

Dinner was a lovely entree of duck followed by fish or something else which I didn't take note of as I was busy eating and being slightly nervous about my upcoming best man's speech.

A last minute switching of speech order saw me going first without the benefit of any father of the bride warm up. But of course it didn't matter - I killed them. Proving once again the value of a little practice and fine tuning. It was interesting though to see which parts proved most popular and which parts were only mildly entertaining to the audience.

Post speech saw me finally able to take advantage of the remaining food and booze before indulging in some serious dance floor antics at the behest of BestFriendSincePrep and Mrs StumpyRudolph. I think I've come away from the evening with a mild case of Khe Sanh circle shoulder.

All in all it was a good night - many of the usual suspects were present plus Handy Dad's very own Legion; Freeloading Mum sported an eraserhead-esque haircut; I had my first meeting with the spawn of Sir Clive Pitbull and also the spawn of Mr Magpie (no relation); BestFriendSincePrep failed to ply me with drinks so I was human today.

Speaking of today there was a free lunch organised for the official gloating over the loot - which was quite extensive. Most unusual present goes to the electric vegetable peeler.

Post lunch I headed over to once again fix Freeloading Mum's home computer and scored a free dinner for my troubles.

Tonight, after a short blackout delayed my scribing of the tales, I have been sweltering in the flat as we begin this run into a hot spell. I may have to press the air-conditioner into action tomorrow night as I've heard they are supposed to be good for dealing with heat issues.

... Pan's Labyrinth

I watched Pan's Labyrinth this morning. It was an enjoyable and beautiful movie with a nice touch of "did it really happen?" mixed with a Brazil-like ending.

Other things going on have been a farewell dinner for ChantellattheLibrary who will be missed as a brightener of the Sandringham workroom. The good part is that I no longer have to clear shelf space for the storytime collection and can continue to horde my obsolete IT equipment - just in case.

After the dinner ArchEnemy brought Legion2 over for some gaming long into the night.

To further deny me a proper nights sleep, Sir Clive Pitbull invited me out last night for a catch up drink in the city. Hector TN was there and we listened raptly to the latest in the ongoing saga of Sir Clive's crazy ex.
