This weekend past saw my once again partaking in an activity in which I had not participated in for many a long time.
Bicycle riding is the activity to which I refer and it came about due to a desire on the part of Salsa Girl to attend the open viewing of a property that she has had her eye on for quite some time.
So dutifully I donned the too-small helmet, mounted my trusty steed (a suitably manly mountain bike), and commenced the ten minute ride to our destination - my first bike ride in nigh-on 15 years.
Much to my surprise remembering how to undertake the endeavour was something one had not forgotten and turned out to be as easy as riding a bike.
On our return journey we paused for a breather and watched the entertainment of the most arrogant auctioneer I have ever seen insulting the crowd for their meagre offers of $800,000 for the featured property. Suffice to say not one bid was made after the first one was greeted with something along the lines of "don't insult me you idiot - now is there any real bidder out there?"
Amusing stuff, although the best line came after the property was passed in and the auctioneer welcomed everyone to feel free to come up and make private offers as they (the auctioning team) were very friendly people.
My Saturday evening consisted of being taken to Salsa by Salsa Girl. One ended up having quite a good evening out despite one's outrage at the lack of corn chips and comestibles as suggested by the misleading event title.
It turns out that my Salsa Girl is quite the dance-floor spinner, and also quite a reasonable teacher being able to instruct yours truly in the fine art of beginner level Salsa - the learning of which proved to be only slightly harder than riding a bike.
Several turns on the dance floor over the course of the evening resulted in not a single episode of resurgent MAMILS or, thankfully, the much feared knee blowout.
Perhaps one should have taken up Salsa rather than soccer those scant few years ago when choosing one's social fitness activity?

... The Very Messy Xmas
Xmas day started off with a glorious hour long phone call with Svetlana discussing such interesting things as the weather - it was -5 in Svetlanaland at the time.
After all the scintillating conversation was finished I set out for a twenty minute walk/jog to counteract the coming feasting but unfortunately my MAMILS was acting up a little so the jog part dropped by the wayside.
I collected Legion2 and headed over to our ancestral home for a lunchtime BBQ with Handy Dad and the rest of the Legion. Of course I had to do some updating of Freeloading Mum's computer while I was there and didn't notice how quickly Legion4 was downing the beverages.
Time came to head over to Aunties for the traditional evening meal and cousin catch-up. Legion3 headed home while 2 and 4 piled into my vehicle. I failed to notice that Legion4 had thought it necessary to bring a beer for the 20 minute trip. I did notice though when said beer was finished within the first half of the journey.
Upon arrival we reacquainted ourselves with cousins, uncles and aunties. We also acquainted ourselves with Cousin Dave's wife.
Pre-dinner conversation and nibbles commenced in the backyard in the wonderful Xmas day evening twilight. It was during this part of the evening that things began to turn messy. Legion4 had continued to avail himself of the amber liquid since we arrived and became variously loud, obnoxious, angry and incomprehensible. He also seemed to come down with a special case of Tourette's repeatedly loudly blurting out things unrelated to current conversation topics - I suspect they were all in-joke sayings he and his friends share when they get smashed at the pub.
Needless to say the embarrassing and cringe-worthy nature of his behaviour brought on a telling off from Handy Dad - quite a surreal experience as one drunk person staggered over to tell the other they were a disgrace and embarrassing the rest of the family. Legion4's only response being an imploring "why me? What did I do?" look towards the rest of the group.
After a dinner time lull he was back at it and yours truly had to leave before dessert to take him home - making it the third time this month that I had missed dessert, hmmm, is the universe trying to tell me something?
The journey home was a wonderful fusion of a building headache punctuated by sudden shouting with small bouts of driver interference all topped off with repetition of "Where the f*** are we?" even twice while waiting at the same set of lights.
Finally he was dropped home and peace descended. Dropping the pleasantly affected Legion2 home was sheer bliss in comparison and then it was straight to bed for me to shake off my blinding headache that had mysteriously developed over the course of the evening.

... The Beginning of the Exercise Regime
After seeing my physio yesterday morning I've been told to start pushing the knee hard to get it back into proper action and beat my MAMILS.
To that end I was up extremely early this morning - at the crack of 8.24am - to walk to the nearby oval and walk/jog laps for twenty minutes or so, something I'm going to have to do fairly regularly from now on.
It was a wonderful clear morning for it, compared with some we've had recently, and surprisingly I feel somehow better for my early morning exercise.

... A Short Outage and a Curse Confirmed
Telstra was up to their shenanigans again on Wednesday and I was off the air at home and unable to post to The Tales.
Luckily I saved my scrawlings and you can read them below but be warned - in this fast paced modern internet world they may have aged somewhat since Wednesday. My apologies if they seem quaint and naive.
In other news the curse on my jumper is confirmed. I refrained from wearing it while I watched the Anzac day footy and we walloped the Dons. I did think about donning the jumper when we were 50 points up and Essendon promptly scored 3 goals in succession so I banished the thought.
From Wednesday April 23, 2008:
... Free Bikkies and Forced Rest
I made a little trip to the Corporate Castle yesterday for some free bikkies and 15 minutes of forced rest. Yes it's flu shot time again.
It's my third year running and I haven't had any major flu in that time so I'm sticking with it. Besides, one can eat a lot of free bikkies in the 15 minutes that they make you sit around to see if you'll die from the serum.
The day before I had my driver's license upgraded and was surprised to find that you can smile in the photo. I did even though I was worried that my hair may have been a bit unruly given that it's overdue for a trim. The photo has to represent me for 10 years and they say that since it's digital now I may even be able to use it to represent my late 40's self at the next upgrade.
I've popped back in to my spiritual home at Sandringham a few times recently. First to hook everyone up to the new printer and then to fix it after Mr Prada jammed it all up - although I do suspect that Days of our Libraries may have been playing saboteur since the printer is getting more workroom attention than she is.
The Knee Update
The license renewal happened because I had to kill time waiting for a Physio appointment.
Apparently I have great thighs for extra knee support and all I've done is pinched the cartilage. I should be back scoring again in two to three weeks.

... Pimping my Hotspot
I spent a reasonable chunk of time Friday morning limping around on my bad knee showing off the wonders of my wireless internet hotspot at Brighton to a gaggle of Stonningtonites.
They seemed suitably impressed with it - particularly with the other-people-set-it-up-rather-than-the-library-IT-person part.
Of course my stunning presentation was cut short by repeated "hey Phill!" problems cropping up and staff vigorously hunting me down to solve them. I didn't even get the chance to try for a thank you lunch from my enrapt audience. Instead I had to hobble down the street for my sustenance.
The Knee Report: Days 2 and 3
Yesterday was a day of hobbling and war story telling. The general feeling was one of tenderness. I received suitable sympathy from Sister Serials, but most others gave me a Supervisor S style of "I warned you about MAMILS" attitude.
Today the knee has been stiffer but also feeling much more like it will heal up quite soon - I would be listed on the footy injury list as TEST (although I'll probably have to skip next weeks soccer).
I'm also currently considering purchasing a cane for myself so I can wave it angrily at the young whippersnappers while muttering things about lack of respect.

... a Year of Soccer
It was exactly a year ago today that I started playing casual Soccer once a week. In honour of the anniversary my MAMILS reappeared two thirds of the way into tonights game but it has settled down again now. I ran around an awful lot tonight and the game wouldn't end as the "last goal wins" part of the evening went on for almost twenty minutes until finally the ball was kicked over the fence.
... the Return of MAMILS
I played in my weekly casual soccer game last night (still no goals!) and the left knee MAMILS returned. MAMILS (Middle Aged Man's Injured Leg Syndrome) was first pointed out to me by Supervisor S last year as something that happens to middle-aged men when they take up sport again. Of course since S mentioned it I've been plagued by mystery twinges and tenderness so be aware, now that I've told you about MAMILS you too are vulnerable.
In any case the knee is only slightly tender this morning so I think I've dodged the MAMILS bullet.
After soccer was the Thursday night Super Heroes role-playing game. Quite a good session with my character Jackie returning from other dimensions with news of the repercussions of our actions and getting the team to cross back to try and fix things... or so they think.
